"The Return" is the premiere episode of the second season of The CW television series, The Vampire Diaries and the 23rd episode of the series overall. It originally aired on September 9, 2010. The episode was written by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec and directed by J. Miller Tobin.

The episode starts from exactly where the last episode of the first season ends. Elena (Nina Dobrev) walks in the door and she hears a noise in the kitchen that makes her go check what is happening. She finds John (David Anders) lying on the floor and she immediately calls 911. Katherine is standing right behind her and John warns her about it. Elena grabs the knife and tries to see who is in the house but Katherine leaves before the two meet. Elena rushes to Jeremy's (Steven R. McQueen) and finds him unconscious in his bed.

Matt Richenthal from TV Fanatic rated the episode with 4.2/5. "On "The Return," viewers were welcomed back to Mystic Falls with a slow three-quarters of an episode, as the show caught us up on events from the finale, moved pieces and characters around and laid the groundwork for what was to come." Richenthal, praised Somerhalder's acting once again: "We praised Ian Somerhalder's work every week on season one, but it must be highlighted again. [...] ...and, man, did Somerhalder sell his character's pain well."[3]

Josie Kafka of Doux Reviews rated the episode with 3.5/4 saying that it looks like it will be a great season. "The Season Two premiere was top-notch, and set up plenty of meaty, angsty, delicious goodness for the rest of the season."[4]

Diana Steenbergen of IGN rated the episode with 9/10. "This episode was packed from start to finish, complete with more than one shocking twist at the end. If this episode is an indication, we can put aside any fears that the second season of the show will be less fun than the first."[5]

Popsugar of Buzzsugar gave a good review to the episode stating: "Even if it wasn't quite as crazy as I had hoped, it's setting the groundwork for what'll surely be a thrilling arc"[7] while Alyse Wax of Fearnet said that the last 10 minutes saved the episode from being a total loss: "The action picked up, those ends began to unravel, and intrigue returned to Mystic Falls. I am officially ready for the season to unspool."[8]

Den of Geek gave a good review to the episode saying that the episode didn't disappoint and that the show knows how to begin with a bang. "Personally, I was pretty impressed with the amount they managed to squeeze in here. I thought that the writing was exceptional, and there were quite a few memorable scenes for us as well. The heart to heart between Damon and Stefan was my favourite. [...] For the most part I was pleased with the premiere of the second season."[11]

Elena rings the bell at Stefan's and they walk outside to watch the comet overhead. She admits to being scared earlier when she talked with Stefan since she's not sure she'd survive if her world broke apart again. They discuss what they each would have written in their diaries if they'd had the chance. Stefan looks at Elena and says that this is reality right here. They share a tentative kiss followed by a more lingering one. Caroline is in bed with a guest: Damon. He looks up from kissing her stomach and changes into his vampire form before biting her.

Based on the same-named book series authored by L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural adolescent drama television series created by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. The CW broadcast the first episode of the series on September 10, 2009, and it ran for eight seasons, airing 171 episodes till it was cancelled on March 10, 2017.

*SPOILERS AHEAD* Ok, it looks like each episode will start off with a bang! Somebody getting attacked by a vampire? As Mystic Falls gets ready for it's Fall Festival for a comet passing by. Poor pretty girl Vicky is still recovering in the hospital and is visited by Stefan who tries to use his powers to see if she remembers anything about her attack. One wild pretty cool scene is when Stefan is looking around the hospital and walks in a room of blood donors, his eyes turn black and he has to get the freak out of there!Aunt Jenna is made to feel like she's failing being a guardian to Elena and Jeremy by a trouble making Mr. Tanner.Jeremy also pays Vicky a visit and keeps reminding her he likes her and she politely tells him she older, but she does it with a smile so maybe she's slowly giving in. I think this is how it'll play out.As Elena visits the Salvatore home she finds Stefan is not there at first but she gets to meet Damon who fills her in on Stefan's last girlfriend. As Stefan walks in on the two talking he unhappily insists Elena leave and then he and Damon have a talk and Damon gives him a harsh reality check that the closest he'll ever be to being human is biting the flesh of a neck.As everyone talks and preps for comet night. Elena bumps into a polite Stefan who talks about the comet and apologizes for his rude behavior.Poor Vicky keeps having crazy dreams. Like really crazy (vampires are after her) dreams. I wonder why! As she wonders around she runs into Damon and says "I know you" to his answer of"well that's unfortunate". Then the scene jumps to her in the bathroom as he's rushing her with fangs in full force! Stefan hears Vicky crying at a far distance and finds her along with Damon teasing dropping her from a building top.Damon's influence proves to be much stronger than Stefan's. Damon tried to talk Stefan into feeding on Vicky to get stronger but Stefan refuses to feed on her. Damon plays to Stefan's weakness and then releases Vicky.Stefan's secret might have been compromised bu Bonnie.Aunt Jenna and Elena have a cooling off sit down. Jeremy see's the girl he loves (Vicky) kissing another guy. Caroline runs into a hungry Damon. Elena finds Stefan to watch the comet with her and she talks a little about her "diary" and they have their first kiss. This weeks verdict: You know what! This show is growing on me. Now I know it's for the teenie audience but it has great writing, a little darker than Twilight (which I applaud) and it's building it's character's in a slow smart way, not just shoving them in your face and leaving you to figure things out for yourself.

Over the course of The Vampire Diaries, Elena dated both Salvatore brothers, but when did her heart first beat for Damon? They shared their first kiss in the season 2 finale and didn't become more intimate until season 4 after she'd become a vampire. In season 6 after Damon and Bonnie become trapped in a prison world, Elena admits exactly when she first realized she had feelings for the eldest Salvatore.

Damon admitted his love for Elena in The Vampire Diaries season 2, episode 8, "Rose", when he returned Elena's vervain necklace to her. Before handing the necklace over, Damon compelled Elena to forget his confession. Perhaps he shouldn't have, because Elena started pining for her boyfriend's brother back during season 1 of The Vampire Diaries. According to Elena's own account of things, she knew she had feelings for Damon in season 1, episode 19, "Miss Mystic Falls" when Damon stepped in to act as Elena's escort after Stefan failed to show. 041b061a72
